If you search the Swiss Army Knife catalog, you will find products ranging from single-blade knives to the Wenger 16999 giant knife. The knife is pretty amazing and includes 87 different implements.

While the 16999 is heralded as the most multi-functional penknife in the world, it is not the type of tool you will find anyone actually using. For one thing, it’s too large to fit into a pants pocket, and contrary to their claim, it is not very functional. Finding the appropriate tool and then trying to use it (with the other 86 items complicating matters) renders the product nearly useless.

At the same time, if you move to the opposite end of the spectrum and choose a single bladed knife as your companion, there will be only a limited number of times that the tool is actually useful. Better to go with something in between, say a 7-implement tool, to provide a few options in functionality, while not being overwhelming or complex.

We find that same dynamic when it comes to web-based services. Some firms claim to do it all for an unending span of markets… PR, marketing, digital media, print, websites, SEO, SEM; for any market segment… manufacturing, retail, nonprofit, professional services, entertainment, even the garage next door. On the other end, there are firms that are just able to create a cookie-cutter site with very limited functionality.
