SEO – Still Looking For Meaning

Search Engine Optimization, at times with fits and starts, continues to evolve in a positive direction.

In its early days it was considered a black art; it embraced a near slash and burn mindset, where nearly any tactic to improve site rankings (keyword stuffing, link farms, etc.) was considered an acceptable practice. Today, many of those approaches have been abandoned, which has brought a higher degree of dignity and professionalism to this body of work.

A telling infographic from Mark Purtell, Director of SEO for MediaWhiz, suggests that the SEO landscape is now migrating toward serving the consumer, something that should have been apparent to us from the beginning. And while that means providing meaningful and fresh content, Purtell makes a point to cover some of the technical aspects by highlighting components such as keyword utilization, anchor text and applying the appropriate URLs.

Dr. Peter J. Myers of Moz took an even broader view in his recent blog SEO Tactics Die, But SEO Never Will. He points out that the internet has become so vast and dynamic, that one set of tactics will never last very long. To be effective in being found, will require not only new, compelling content, but experts to optimize all the information so that it is readily found.

We may have made progress over the last few years, but as Myers points out, the internet is just a teenager, with many more things to learn in the years ahead..
