The Story Behind Web Development

As we develop websites, one of the challenges we can have when working with a new client is content development. More than likely, the client will have existing text and images they would like to use or port over from their existing site, but frequently they need to modify and update that content.

We will give them guidelines on creating search engine friendly text, then wait for them to make the modifications so we can populate their site. We also instruct them on finding imagery that is complimentary to the verbiage they create.

We also instruct them that problems can arise when they take too long in providing that information to us. On the surface, it can appear that website development can be stopped and started on a dime; that it’s like driving a car in traffic. While there are clear project milestones and completion points, moving from point “A” to point “B”, there are also nuances in the development effort.

The best analogy we have come up with is to compare it to writing a story. Before beginning to write, you have a vision of what the end result will be, how things start out, and what will be encountered along the journey. At the same time, throughout the writing process, a flow will emerge. You develop a sense of the characters; there is a continuity that develops. If you were to begin writing, then stop for a number of weeks, you would need to circle back for a refresh, to regain the feel and tone of the story.

We view web development to be as much an art form as a technical discipline. Helping our clients understand that is also a component of our art.
