Escaping the Elevator

You’ve probably heard of the need for an elevator pitch: a 30 second to 2-minute introduction to tell someone about your firm and your unique value proposition. According to Wikipedia, the intent is to deliver a summary of who you are and what you do in the span of an elevator ride.

Go to a networking meeting and you will hear individuals that have memorized their pitch: “for X industries, we provide blah, blah, and what makes us different is Y.” For good measure, they will often throw in industry jargon (SEO, ROI, etc.).

What if instead you told a compelling story about the journey you’ve taken, what’s changed your life and how it has brought you this to the present stage. Imagine explaining those experiences and their impact, and how they have put you in a better position to help and serve others. What if you shared such a captivating narrative, that even though they’ve reached their desired floor, they stay on the elevator with you, because they want to hear the rest of your story…
