The Fantasy of a Mobile Future

Long ago, when mobile technology was still in its infancy (about 5 years ago) Google, along with 33 other companies came together to form the Open Handset Alliance.

A formal announcement was made that these firms would work together to develop an open mobile platform called Android. Since that time, Android has become the dominant player in the mobile industry; just last quarter, nearly 75% of all smartphone sales were of the Android variety.

Focusing on sales of Android, iOS or any other particular device, however, really misses the point about what mobile means and the impact it will continue to have on businesses. According to a recent article on TheNextWeb, the expression “mobile industry” is already a relic from the past, and does not fully capture the implications of where the market is going.

Further into that article What Does the Future Hold for the Mobile Industry? author Tessa Sterkenburg asks a number of experts what we can expect from the industry in the coming years. The consensus is that there will be a further interconnectedness with users, and a broader sense of community in using their devices. At the same time, there will be greater control by users to opt-out on connectivity, to find havens in “no airwaves” locations.

For organizations clamoring to reach out to and engage with their desired followers, a compelling story along with rich and meaningful content will continue to be the best means to make connections. Those principles may not sound futuristic enough for some, but no matter where the technology leads us, the basics of human interaction will remain the same…
